Grandma's Final Show

Grandma finished her Master's Degree this summer and we got to enjoy the fruits of it! Her art show in July titled "Window to the World, Window to the Soul" was wonderful. She shared a gallery with two other artists in Alexandria, Virginia. The reception was so nice and as a bonus had great food! We loved getting to walk around and look at the art. We also met some of Grandma's co-workers, friends, fellow-artists and even some of her high school students! The reception was extremely well attended, I don't think Grandma got a single break from greeting guests! More of that tasty asian dip for us!

This was my favorite, Grandma's old broken and mangled eyeglasses wrapped or gingerly set in this catacombs inspired burial ground. The show explored eyes and vision and the many ways beyond corneas and retinas that eyes affect the way we see the world around us. |

These were Photographs and Digital art using pictures of Grandma and Grandpa Helmick, top left, and Adelaide and Nolan, bottom left. They had an overlay of an eye that hovered above the photographs. On the right are three eyes that use repeated biblical text as color and form. |

Saturday Morning Mummy on the left featured generations of toys peeking out from behind a wrapped tomb. Ben looks at a wheel of faces that could be turned to mix and match foreheads & eyes with mouths & chins. The right is a series that featured Riley's pretty brown eyes and her sweet family. |

It's the Garfields! Here Raquel is looking at an eye made of hundreds of torn papers standing on edge. This was Ben's favorite piece in the show. |

A woman photographs this funky family tree. The materials of each doll combine to form the next generation, with one exception...is this rated "G" Grandma? |

Elspeth, Reed Garfield and Grandpa J enjoy the evening in front of a tryptic collage of vision inspired text and graphics. This is a better view of the wheel of faces which at the moment is matched up right! |
